WILLOWS, CA – Glenn County Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved the purchase of 20 new vehicles to replace older models due for replacement. The cost of the new additions total $410,000, according to ChicoER.com.

Fourteen of the replacements are for law enforcement patrol cars, and the rest are for one passenger sedan, two trucks, two cargo vans, and one eight-passenger van. Fleet Operations Manager Rick Nunes said agencies are beginning to realize it's cheaper for employees attending conferences to use vans instead of the assigned cars.

While standard vehicles are normally replaced after reaching 100,000 miles of use or at eight years, the limit for patrol cars is 90,000 miles or five years. However, Nunes said he stretches the life of a vehicle if it's apparent it can go another 25,000 miles or so.

The purchase is paid for by funds from a special replacement program account, collected from fees agencies pay to use the vehicles.

Vehicles being replaced may be auctioned off online, but a date hasn't been set.
