IronPlanet, an online marketplace for buying and selling used heavy equipment and trucks, announced that Jeff Holmes has joined as vice president, Government Solutions. Holmes brings a unique background that combines his military service with a corporate career spent driving efficiency and growth through business and government partnerships.

“I am pleased to have Jeff join IronPlanet with his deep industry knowledge and experience in both the public and private sectors,” said Gregory J. Owens, IronPlanet chairman and CEO. “He understands and can expertly navigate complex government relationships. Jeff is disciplined and driven, and knows how to be strategic while managing a fast-growing business like our GovPlanet marketplace. He is joining IronPlanet at a time when we are seeing great momentum across our businesses. I look forward to working with Jeff as he carries that momentum to GovPlanet and our public sector customers.”

At IronPlanet, Holmes is responsible for business development of its GovPlanet marketplace, including all development, management and growth of its federal and municipal government as well as its military relationships.

“IronPlanet’s business is remarkable in that it delivers real value unlike traditional supply and disposition channels currently used by the public sector,” said Holmes. “IronPlanet’s innovative technology-driven approach represents a new opportunity for government agencies to recoup a major part of their capital investments, better manage their fleets and more efficiently handle the disposition of heavy equipment.”

IronPlanet launched its GovPlanet marketplace in November 2014. In the first two months of online auctions, IronPlanet, through its GovPlanet marketplace, helped the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) generate more than $3.5 million in government proceeds from disposed surplus rolling stock, triple the results for the U.S. taxpayer from the previous contract.

Holmes has worked extensively in both commercial and government supply chain operations. Prior to joining IronPlanet, he worked for PwC Management Consulting’s Retail and Consumer Sector Operations. There he focused on brand promise, customer experience, supply chain, technology and sourcing to the consumer goods and retail supply chain. At PRTM, Holmes was a partner focused on the Global Public Sector business opportunities group (or “GOV group”), including the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and other federal agencies. There, he worked extensively on business strategy, organizational alignment, sales and operations planning (S&OP), logistics and supply chain operations. He also worked on design and implementation of leading practices for maintenance operations across the DOD community. He was a key leader in business initiatives to reduce operational cost in transportation and logistics.

Before PRTM, Holmes was an executive vice president and the president of Worldwide Sales Operations at Manugistics Group Incorporated (now JDA Software Group). During his tenure at Manugistics, he was responsible for developing the Government Business Unit and had oversight for worldwide revenue generation. He also managed seven corporate acquisitions for the company.

After retiring from the U.S. Army in 1992, as a Lieutenant Colonel with 20 years of active service, Holmes worked extensively in international logistics operations for Mars, Incorporated, including assignments in Russia and Canada.

A regular speaker at several academic and defense institutions, Holmes has also been a member of the board of directors at both the Supply Chain Council and the American Electronics Association (now TechAmerica). Holmes holds an MS, Contracting and Acquisition Management, from Florida Institute of Technology and a BA, Political Science, University of Pittsburgh.
