Facility Tour: City of Oakland, Calif.

About 300 tires are kept in inventory at all times. Tires are usually ordered 100 at a time due to the high volume of tires used, especially on police vehicles.

Big Red, a mobile service truck, is stocked with tires, batteries, and essential parts and driven to Oakland Police Department's two parking lots to service off-site vehicles.

This Columbia Payloader electric vehicle is used around the facilities. It can carry 10 tires at once and was retrofitted to push a stalled vehicle around if needed.

The city's alternative fuel fleet includes Honda Civics that run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

Old police vehicles are used for training. The vehicle shown above was retrofitted for training pursuit intervention technique (PIT) maneuvers.

The fleet has one DC fast charger and several Level 2 chargers.

Fleet owns most city vehicles and leases them out to user departments, using a monthly rate that covers maintenance and insurance.

Police units make up the majority of the city fleet.

The Oakland Police Department fleet includes about 100 Ford Crown Victorias and 150 Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles.

The fleet adopted renewable diesel two years ago, and has fully transitioned away from regular diesel.

The fleet has chosen to invest in battery-electric vehicles, which offer more incentives than hybrids or plug-in hybrids.

Many vehicles purchases by the city prior to 2003 were painted a distinct shade of green.
