MEMPHIS, TN- The FBI is probing two city auto-repair contracts awarded during former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton's administration, according to The Commercial Appeal.

The federal law enforcement agency has obtained copies of canceled checks totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars written to two Memphis firms, a tire-repair contractor and a second firm that does auto-body repairs for the city, reported the Appeal.

The precise focus of the inquiry remains unclear, but at least part of it involves former General Services director Estrice "Bud" Boone, whose City Hall e-mail account also was obtained by the FBI, according to the Appeal.

The FBI obtained March 11 city records of copies of contracts, invoices, and all canceled checks written to the two firms since 2005. The letter, obtained by The Commercial Appeal last week, also seeks "any and all e-mail records"' from Boone's account over the same period.

Among concerns, invoices show one of the firms charged the city $1,200 to make 20 flat repairs on one police car over a 23-month period ending November 2008 -- 11 of those flat changes reportedly occurring at the same intersection in a North Memphis residential neighborhood, reported the Appeal.
