San Bernardino County, Calif., has completed the construction of a new fleet maintenance facility, replacing an existing leased facility that had become inadequate for fleet needs. The Victorville High Desert Service Center is one of six fleet facility and is used to service approximately 600 light-duty and 200 heavy-duty vehicles, said Ron Lindsey, CAFS, fleet management director.

“The facility was designed with expansion in mind,” Lindsey said. “The shop itself has a much larger capacity to handle work than the old facility (for future insourcing opportunities and growth).” He added that the site can be expanded with an on-site car wash and fuel site in the future if needed.

The service center sits on five acres, and the building measures 24,389 square feet. It features three heavy vehicle pull-through bays that are 26 feet wide and 100 feet long and 12 light vehicle bays. The facility includes a large parts room, a large break room, and WiFi throughout the shop.

Current staffing includes 12 team members: seven vehicle technicians, two motor pool assistants, a parts technician, a shop lead technician, and fleet supervisor.

The facility has been in use for a couple of months, Lindsey reported. The county will hold a grand opening ceremony on July 18.
