The New York City fleet has installed the 2,000th truck sideguard on city fleet units, with installations continuing weekly. Sideguards have been installed on all Parks, Department of Correction, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) trucks, according to the fleet newsletter. Other departments have sideguards on part of their fleets.

The sideguard installations are a part of Vision Zero, a plan to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries. The city began installing them in 2015. This and other initiatives have led to an overall reduction in traffic fatalities city-wide and within the fleet.

So far, 2,000 fleet trucks have sideguards installed.

A 2015 study published by DCAS and the U.S. Dept. of Transportation’s Volpe Center found that although trucks only make up 3.6% of vehicles operating in the city, truck sides were involved with up to 25% of pedestrian hits and 55% for bicyclists.
