The New York City fleet has increased its claims revenue from vehicle accidents. Fleet claims revenue between fiscal-year 2017 and fiscal-year 2019 was 30% higher than it was between fiscal-year 2014 and fiscal-year 2016, according to a report from the city’s Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS).

Some factors that have contributed to this increase include the city’s CRASH tracking and telematics initiatives, part of the city’s Vision Zero program, as well as partnership with the Comptroller’s Office for claims management.

DCAS Fleet Manager Keith Kerman noted that the claims process depends on the support of city fleet operators and agencies, and shared some guidance on what NYC fleet operators are instructed to do:

  • Do a complete and thorough crash report if your vehicle is hit.

  • Get as many pictures of the city and private vehicle damage as you can and load them onto the CRASH system.

  • Make sure to get the vehicle license, drive license name and license number, vehicle registration, and insurance information for the private operator and vehicle. Copy this information down.

  • Contact the NYPD through 911 to respond. Although NYPD is making some changes to crash response for private vehicle crashes without injuries, NYPD will respond to all crashes, with or without injury, involving city-owned vehicles.
