Sheriff’s Fleet Facility Shut Down Over Safety Concerns

A fleet management garage opened by the Randolph County (N.C.) Sheriff has been shut down after a complaint concerning safety issues was filed with the state. The issues included: no eye protection gear, no first aid supplies, no proper storage of flammables, a locked exit door, inadequate electrical installation for some equipment, and employees with lack of training, the Courier Tribune reported.

The sheriff had proposed the new repair shop and a full-time mechanic to service the 240 vehicles to save on costs over taking them to commercial garages. County commissioners did not provide the funds, and the sheriff used his own funds for the garage, the newspaper reported.

In a Facebook post, Sheriff Greg Seabolt wrote, “When I took office in December of 2018, I formed a committee to look at ways to save money for the tax payers of this county. The cost of servicing our vehicles was the main expense that we could improve on. In reference to the Fleet Maintenance facility, we are still waiting for the county commissioners to approve the opening.”

He added that the county manager had approved equipment purchases for the facility.
