Beginning July 1, Berkeley County, W.Va., fleet vehicles will receive preventive and light maintenance fleet work from the Eastern Panhandle Transit Authority. The move is an effort to cut the county's fleet management costs, the Herald Mail Media reported.

The county previously contracted out fleet work to businesses, which will likely continue to do major repairs.

According to the memorandum of understanding between the county council and the transit authority, the county will provide and maintain a preventive maintenance (PM) schedule and service records, coordinate service times, and deliver vehicles for appointments. It will also provide PM materials such as oil, filters, lube, coil packs, spark plugs, fluids, etc.

The transit authority will provide PM services, inspection, and monthly accounting and invoice for service and labor. The transit authority charges an hourly rate of $45.

The transit agency will add another mechanic to take on the additional work, the news source reported.
