The South Central Solid Waste Authority in New Mexico has purchased a new mobile tire shredder that allows it to recycle old tires, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.
The $200,000 shredder was purchased with grant funds. Officials said the cost to send a tire to the landfill is $1 each, while shredding costs 30 cents apiece.
The authority is the joint city and county agency responsible for handling solid waste and recyclables in Las Cruces and Dona Ana County.
