New York City fleet agencies now have a new charging resource available: curbside charging. The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) announced the first curbside charger, for general public use, in June 2021. Of the 120 curbside chargers planned for development, 20 were to be dedicated to city fleet vehicles. The first 12 of these chargers are now open for use. These are level 2 chargers and will work with the current city EV charging card.

The curbside chargers are located at:

  • 30th Place between Thomson Ave and 47th Ave, 6 spaces, Queens

  • Red Cross Place between Cadman Plaza East and Brooklyn Bridge Blvd/Adams St, six spaces, Brooklyn

  • Additional sites in Manhattan will be open later in the year at Leonard Street between Lafayette and Centre Streets, (four spaces) and Reade Street between Elk and Lafayette Streets, (four spaces).

DCAS is also in the process of a large rollout of additional chargers. This will include over 200 more fast chargers, 50 portable battery storage chargers, 71 solar carports, and 300 level 2 chargers. Overall, this will be a 50% increase in total charging capacity in the next 18 months.

DCAS, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), and fleet agencies have rolled out 1,287 charging ports with more opening weekly.

To support New York City's growing fleet, DOT, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), and fleet agencies have so far rolled out 1,287 charging ports with more opening weekly. This charging network includes level 2 slow chargers, 50 kilowatt (KW) fast chargers, and solar carports for the city's more than 3,600 active or delivered electric vehicles.
