LOS ANGELES – The U.S. Department of Energy and California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District have awarded a cost-shared project to Odyne Systems, a developer of hybrid systems for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.

“We are excited to deploy our newest hybrid technology into the California market and look forward to working with Los Angeles County, the largest county in the U.S., and the Los Angeles Department of Public Works, the largest municipal utility in the country, who have agreed to participate in the project,” said Joe Dalum, president of Odyne Systems, LLC.

Odyne will install seven Odyne Hybrid Power systems into bucket trucks and underground utility trucks. The company is working with Terex Utilities and Remy Motors on this project. Two of the vehicles will be deployed in the California South Coast Air Basin. Odyne also plans to use funds for this project to further develop its hybrid technology and evaluate the performance of demonstrator vehicles using Odyne advanced plug-in hybrid systems.

“Plug-in hybrid technology has the potential to provide substantial air quality benefits for the South Coast region,” said AQMD Executive Officer Barry Wallerstein. “This demonstration will help accelerate these benefits, especially in communities, neighborhoods, and schools where these work trucks operate.”
