Calhoun County, Mich., is issuing $6.5 million in bonds for Road Department fleet equipment and a salt barn. The bond will be repaid over a 15-year period and modernize the county’s fleet, which has not had any new vehicles between 2001 and 2011, according to the Battle Creek Enquirer.

The current list of requested items includes 24 items, including plow trucks, loaders, mowers, radio upgrades, and pick-up trucks. County voters approved the bond on June 18.

The city has been spending "a tremendous amount of money" fixing vehicles that are no longer mechanically sound, the assistant county administrator told the media outlet.

If the bond had not passed, the county would have only been able to purchase a few items, and the Road Department would be unable to keep up with maintenance due to the “neglected fleet replacement plans over the past several years,” the agenda item for the Board of County Commissioners meeting stated.
