The City of Lincoln, Neb., has started the process to purchase new fire engines and trucks. Lincoln Fire and Rescue has $3.4 million available over the two-year budget cycle, reported the Lincoln Journal Star.

With the budgeted funds, the city expects to buy five fire engines and one truck. If given a discount for purchasing multiple vehicles, the city hopes to afford six fire engines and one truck.

The city’s aging fire fleet and its need for replacement vehicles has been a major topic of discussion. In July, the Lincoln Journal Star reported that a 21-year-old fire engine had to be towed away from a job after its injectors blew off and dumped diesel on the ground. Fire rescue vehicles broke down while responding to emergencies four other times over the past two years.
