New York City will install 200 new electric vehicle (EV) fast charging stations, adding to the 103 it already has in operation, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) announced in its newsletter. The chargers can be used by city fleet vehicles and by the public.

The new fast chargers, to be located on city-owned agency sites, are expected to be fully installed by December 2023. This is part of a long-term plan to have 1,776 EV fast chargers operational by 2030.

These additional chargers will help support the nearly 1,000 new replacement fleet EVs that are on order now and will be operated by 22 separate agencies and offices. Most of these EVs are expected to arrive by June 30. DCAS is also working on an additional order of more than 340 all-electric cargo vans and on other EV truck projects.

DCAS is also conducting market research for the next generation of charging. It is looking to implement next-stage chargers with greater charging speeds, failsafe and enhanced resiliency, backup power options, battery storage, inter-operability, and vehicle to grid capacity.

As with the previous chargers, DCAS will partner with Con Edison to survey the electrical capacity at each proposed site and with the DCAS electrical services vendor for installation.
