Charlotte, North Carolina, City Manager Marcus Jones presented his proposed fiscal-year 2023 budget to the mayor and City Council this week. It included a $1.45 million investment in electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) and a purchase of 55 electric vehicles (EVs) for the city fleet.
The purchase would bring the city’s total EV count to 174 vehicles; the additions would include electric buses, trucks, vans, and a street sweeper.
In addition, the city is making plans for an all-electric fire station and electric fire truck. The all-electric station would “shift the type of energy we use in buildings away from natural gas,” according to the proposal documents. The Police Department is also expected to pilot its first electric pursuit vehicle.
The EVSE investments would support paratransit vehicles (which will purchase plug-in electric hybrid minivans) as well as two EVSE spaces.
The proposed budget will have a public hearing on May 9 and will be considered by Council for adoption on May 31. The 2023 fiscal year begins July 1.
