New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that the city has deployed more than 500 electrified vehicles — battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) — in its fleet and all orders of non-emergency sedans for fiscal-year 2017 will be electrified vehicles. The city plans to reach nearly 1,000 vehicles by the end of 2017 and cut municipal vehicle emissions in half by 2025 and 80% by 2035.

In late 2015, the city launched NYC Clean Fleet, a plan to add 2,000 BEVs and PHEVs to its fleet, reducing gasoline consumption by approximately 2.5 million gallons a year. The plan is part of Mayor de Blasio's OneNYC, a series of initiatives to create a more sustainable city.

"A little less than a year ago, we made a commitment to create a greener, cleaner fleet with the end goal of creating a more sustainable city," de Blasio said in a statement. "It is time that we take ownership and responsibility for our climate. By furthering our work to create the greenest and cleanest electric fleet in the country and world, we are leading the way for others to follow in our footsteps and leaving a lasting impression on our climate."
