Targa Sound Terminal in Tacoma, Wash., will become what is believed to be the first terminal in the state to offer renewable diesel (R99) when it begins dispensing the fuel in early 2017. The terminal, which sells to distributors, is making the fuel available due to increasing demand from government agencies, said Craig Cole from Targa.
Renewable diesel will be available at Targa’s loading rack in January. Targa also provides ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and E-15, E-85, and biodiesel.
Cost in comparison to ULSD is still unknown. A $1 per gallon federal tax credit for renewable diesel is set to expire at the end of 2016. Washington does not have a Low Carbon Fuel Standard in place.
Targa is holding an open house on Nov. 10 for members of the Public Fleet Managers Association and those involved in purchasing, marketing, air quality, and fuel distribution to educate them about renewable diesel.
Various public fleets in Washington, California, and Oregon have made the switch to renewable diesel, including the City and County of San Francisco, the State of California, and the Eugene Water and Electric Board in Oregon. New York City is also testing the fuel.
