The Harris County (Texas) Emergency Services District No. 9 has purchased 10 Pierce Quantum apparatus for use by its provider, the Cypress-Fairbanks (Cy-Fair) Volunteer Fire Department. The purchase includes six pumpers, two 105-foot heavy-duty aerial ladders, and two 100-foot aerial platforms.

“With these purchases, we are in the process of standardizing our emergency response fleet around the Quantum chassis,” Steven Witt, assistant fire chief, explained. “We like the Quantum’s roomy interior, the flat cab floor, and the excellent outward visibility. It also has a high air intake location, which is important to us because of the flooding that often takes place down here.”

The six Pierce Quantum pumpers each feature TAK-4 independent front suspension, a Detroit DD13 470-hp big block engine, a 430-amp alternator, a 22-inch front bumper extension, frontal and side impact protection, a raised roof cab, and seating for five firefighters. Other highlights include a Control Zone pump panel, 2,000-gpm single stage water pump, a Husky 12 dual agent foam system, a full complement of ground ladders, a hydraulic ladder rack, crosslays, and speedlays.

The two Pierce Quantum 105-foot heavy-duty ladders are each powered by a Detroit DD13 525-hp big block engine riding on a tandem rear-axle configuration. The vehicles include Command Zone advanced electronics, frontal and side impact protection, a 12-inch raised and notched roof cab, seating for five firefighters, and Pierce PS6 air-ride seats for the driver and officer. The firefighting system includes a 500-gallon water tank, crosslays and speedlays, and a remote-controlled monitor.

The two Pierce Quantum rear-mounted aerial platforms are each equipped with a Detroit DD13 525-hp big block engine riding on a tandem rear axle configuration, and with TAK-4 independent front suspension. The cab seats five firefighters and also offers frontal impact and side roll protection systems. The aerial platform provides a large basket, two wireless remote control monitors, Lyfe rescue tool accessories, breathing air to the tip, and LED lighting along the entire length of the ladder and at the basket.

The Cy-Fair VFD provides fire, emergency medical, and dispatch services within an area that encompasses 164 square miles and is home to 440,000 citizens. Its total staff of 600 includes 350 volunteer firefighters. The department operates 12 fire stations, with another due to open in 2017.
