The Newport News, Va., City Council has approved $1 million toward replacing fleet vehicles at least nine years old. The expenditure is the second lowest for new vehicles in seven years.

The city has spent an average of $1.43 million per year replacing fleet vehicles since 2008, and has spent at least $1 million per year only once, when it allocated $750,000 in 2011, reports the Daily Press.

The city maintains a fleet of 1,133 vehicles supported by general fund dollars and another 373 vehicles supported by city user fees.

The current under-funding is expected to delay replacement of nine-year vehicles and increase maintenance and overtime costs. "It's a pay me now (or) pay me later proposition in the fleet world," said Chris Perry, fleet support specialist with the city's Vehicle and Equipment Services Department.
