The City of Petersburg (Va.) Police and Fire Departments are hoping the FY-2018 budget will bring funding for fleet vehicles in desperate need of replacement, according to The Progress-Index.

There are no police vehicles that are less than five years old, and maintenance costs are a drain on the budget, the Police Department’s interim chief said. The department is requesting funding for 16 replacement vehicles.

The fire chief said the city didn’t have money to repair its fire trucks and has been borrowing trucks from surrounding agencies. Two of nine engines are due for replacement, and two need to be moved to reserve status.

The city’s interim finance director is optimistic that fire and police needs will be met with the new budget, the newspaper reported.
