BOMAG Compactor Provides Refuse Compaction for Tough Sites

The BC 873 RB-5 is now part of a family that includes the BOMAG 973 and 1173-RB-5.

Up until last year, BOMAG offered refuse compactors in the 84,000 to 105,000-lb. range. But it set out to produce a 90,000-lb. compactor to meet demands of some of the larger waste management companies.

BOMAG achieved that with its recent release of the BC 873 RB-5, and that helps the company meet the needs of about 45% to 48% of the market that operates in that weight class for landfill compactors. The company now offers products from 60,000 lbs. up to 125,000 lbs.

Smaller Wheels, Shorter Blade

The BC 873 RB-5 is now part of a family that includes the BOMAG 973 and 1173-RB-5, but the 873 features the same chassis engine platform as its big brothers, the 1173 and 973, said Alex Papp, manager of landfill products for BOMAG.

How the 873 gets its weight difference is that the wheels are a smaller diameter, and the blade is shorter in width.

“So we’re able to basically take the 1173 machine, put different-sized wheels on it, a different size blade, and we get that 90,000-lb. machine,” Papp said.

The 873 helps BOMAG meet challenges with parts and service ability. By using the same parts and chassis for the two largest market size units, 90,000 and 120,000 lbs., BOMAG is able to close a gap in service and parts availability.

But now that the 1173 is basically the same machine as the 873 but with just a different blade, both machines will use the same parts.

The company describes the 873 as providing the pack and punch that companies need from the 1173 but with the weight distribution over the wheels for strong compaction capability. The 873 offers heavy-duty premium wheels, featuring a 5-year/10,000-hour warranty.

By the Numbers:

  • Gross weight: 93,431 lbs. or 41,900 kg.

  • Cylinders: 6

  • Compaction wheel width: 1,200 mm
