The Cat 816K landfill compactor features a fuel-efficient engine, single-lever steering, an improved cab air filtration system, and three wheel/tip options that provide extended service life, according to Caterpillar Inc.

What’s more, available Cat COMPACT technologies — including Compaction Control — further enhance performance.

Saves Fuel, Curbs Emissions

The Cat C7.1 ACERT engine meets EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards and features advanced technologies that don’t interrupt the machine’s work cycle.

The Cat next-generation high-pressure/common-rail fuel system delivers fuel in a precise series of “micro-bursts” during each cycle, providing extremely efficient combustion, the manufacturer said. Control systems lower the engine’s average working speed for reduced heat loads and additional fuel efficiency. An engine-idle-shutdown system also saves fuel by eliminating excess idling.

The 816K’s planetary power-shift transmission features special metallurgy and gear heat-treating for extra durability, Caterpillar said.

The foundation of the 816K’s design is its massive, robotically welded main structures. A full box-section rear frame resists torsional shock and twisting forces. Heavy-duty steering cylinder mounts efficiently transmit steering loads into the frame.

Bottom Guarding Reduces Wear

Specialized guarding protects components from damage, debris accumulation, chemicals, and premature wear. Axle guarding prevents material from wrapping and binding around the axles.

Three new wheel and tip configurations allow matching the 816K to the application. The Paddle Tip reduces weight and provides high performance with reduced fuel burn. It offers the best traction. The Plus Tip provides greater side-slope stability and delivers the best compaction. The Combination Tip provides an effective compromise of performance, fuel economy, and side-slope stability, according to Caterpillar.

The Cat 816K’s cab features more interior room and an improved air filtration and ventilation system, pointed out Tom Griffith, senior system and application specialist with Caterpillar. The cab is also quieter, and a standard rearview camera system enhances operator visibility.

The Cat STIC (steering and transmission integrated control) eases the operator’s workload as well, combining steering and transmission control into a single lever, Griffith said.

Technology Options

The Cat Vital Information Management System (VIMS) notifies operators and technicians about potential problems, allowing issues to be resolved more quickly. In addition, Cat LINK technologies wirelessly provide fleet managers with a range of critical information via the VisionLink interface.

Cat COMPACT technologies combine advanced compaction measurement, in-cab guidance, and reporting capabilities to help consistently meet compaction targets in fewer passes. The factory-installed Cat Compaction Control system measures compaction values and provides 3D pass-mapping guidance that indicates when layers have reached optimum density.
