Despite a decrease of 72.6% in car sales during this period, the truck/SUV category surged ahead.

The landscape of government vehicle sales has been a hot topic that has garnered significant attention. And rightfully so. But to gain a deeper understanding of the potential trajectory ahead, it’s worthwhile to look into the trends of previous years. As per Bobit/Government Fleet sales data* released on Jan. 3, 2024, the total government vehicle sales for the year reached 272,403 units, marking a 35.5% increase from the 201,049 units recorded in 2022.

Breaking down the sales figures by vehicle type, in 2023, car sales reached 20,584 units, reflecting a 95.9% increase from the 10,507 units sold in 2022. On the other hand, trucks/SUVs recorded a total of 251,819 units in 2023, showcasing a 32.2% increase from the 190,542 units sold in the previous year.

Breaking Down Government Vehicle Sales Trends

Looking at the monthly trends, January 2024 showcased a total of 19,821 units sold, marking an 8,605 unit increase (76%) from January 2022. Car sales witnessed a substantial 256% increase, while truck/SUV sales grew by 74%. 

In the span of just two years, the landscape of government vehicle sales has seen a shift. Examining the January figures for 2022, 2023, and 2024 reveals a noticeable growth trajectory. In 2022, total sales stood at 11,216, but fast forward to January 2024, and the numbers rose to an impressive 19,821, representing an overall increase of 76%. Cars, a crucial component of the public sector, experienced a boost. 

From a modest 145 in January 2022, car sales increased to 1,925 in January 2023, only to decrease to 527 in January 2024, resulting in a 72.6% decrease over the last year. On the other hand, truck/SUV sales showcased consistent growth, rising from 11,067 in January 2022 to 19,294 in January 2024, marking a 74% increase. 

The period between January 2023 and January 2024 saw an additional increase of 1,235 in total sales, reflecting a 6.6% growth. Despite a decrease of 72.6% in car sales during this period, the truck/SUV category surged ahead, experiencing a 15.8% increase. 

*Hyundai, Nissan, Subaru, and Toyota sales numbers were not present for government fleets.
