Caterpillar has released its Cat 336 hydraulic excavator, and it’s notable for its fuel efficiency and safety features, says Caterpillar market professional Ryan Neal.

Three engine modes match excavator power to the demands of the job, which helps save fuel. The excavator’s smart mode automatically matches engine and hydraulic power to digging conditions to lower fuel consumption. Eco mode reduces engine speed to a constant 1,500 rpm, which also minimizes fuel consumption. Finally, power mode is set up to provide maximum power for more demanding tasks.

Engine oil and fuel filters are synchronized for service at 1,000 hours. That helps increase uptime and lowers parts and labor costs compared to the 336F Series excavator.

Neal says fuel efficiency and technology and safety features were among the highlights of the new machine that would be of interest to governments.

“Fuel efficiency is fantastic on this excavator,” Neal says. “The second one would be technology and the safety features being able to have a cab avoidance, and e-swing, which means we can limit the swing, the rotation of swing left or right, as well as taking the boom, sticking bucket too far out, we could put this machine in a protective bubble.”

Caterpillar is also highlighting what it describes as simple, comfortable operation, with next-generation cab trim levels. A heated air-suspension seat is a feature of the Deluxe cabs. Premium cabs come with a heated and ventilated air-suspension seat. Both of those cab levels feature a tilt up left-hand console, and the company says that provides easier access in and out of the machine.

A touchscreen monitor and jog dial provide quick navigation through machine controls. They also provide easy access to the machine’s digital operator’s manual. Cat Stick Steer is optional.
