In-car cameras will be installed in 40 Vallejo (California) Police Department vehicles. The Axon Fleet 3 cameras will show activity in the front of the police car, as well as in the back seat, according to a press release.
The cameras will record traffic stops, vehicle pursuits, transport of anyone under arrest, and more. The department reports this is its latest step in increasing transparency in policing. Vallejo Police have been scrutinized by members of the public in recent years for a number of incidents. Late last year, an independent investigation determined one officer violated department policy in a 2020 officer-involved shooting, according to KTVU. Police Chief Shawny K. Williams said he hopes this technology will help increase trust in the department.
“We are building trust through transparency by leveraging technology that provides greater officer safety, awareness, and real-time information,” Williams said. “Integrating these in-car cameras enhances our efficiency, effectiveness, and commitment to providing exceptional service to our community while also fulfilling our obligation to improve oversight and accountability. The cameras aid in protecting our residents and give our community greater confidence in the work our officers are doing."
The Axon cameras have automated license plate reader capabilities, provide multi-lane views with audio in front of the patrol car, contain a GPS of the patrol car location, and more.
The department will begin using Fleet 3 cameras by June.
