Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) is trading in its black-and white patrol cars for gray, which will match state trooper uniforms. The new vehicles feature the word “Trooper” on each side, with the Pennsylvania flag on one side and the American flag on the other. The change in appearance was motivated by the agency's goal to make its vehicles more identifiable by the public.

PSP's new patrol cars are also equipped with several technology upgrades, such as mobile video recorders, radios, light bars, spot lights, and push bumpers.

The new design will be phased in over the next three years; the agency will wait for vehicles to reach their regular replacement schedule instead of taking them out of service to paint. Vehicles are typically taken out of service after reaching 100,000 miles, and sold at auction.

The agency’s current black, white, and gold design has been in place since 1991. It has used gray patrol vehicles in the past, from 1946 to 1963.

Editor's Note: This story was updated August 11 with a photo of the new vehicle and more information on the design.
