ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The Albuquerque Police Department has a new policy: Officers living outside city limits will no longer be able to take their police cars home, according to KOAT.com.

The new policy went into effect last week and will affect about 200 officers who live outside the prescribed zone.

The new policy also requires that patrol officers must wait a year after they start to take home a car, and that officers who take the car home can only drive it from home to work, court, and other police events.

Police vehicles are no longer allowed for personal use.

With APD's fuel and maintenance budget cut by about $650,000, Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz said cutting costs will increase the fleet's life span.

Schultz also said this new car policy will not affect call responses or services, and said the department has officers patrolling 24 hours a day.

Parts of the new policy will be phased in, so officers living outside the city limits can have time to make arrangements. They have until January of next year. Officers who choose to live outside the prescribed zone will have to leave the police cars at their substations, according to the news source.
