Police in Madill, Okla., is warning residents to keep an eye on their bank statements to ensure their credit cards aren’t compromised. The City of Madill is among the victims — the city was informed by its card management company that 75% of its fleet cards across multiple departments were compromised, KXII-TV reported.

The city clerk told KXII-TV that there have not been any reports of the city losing money from these compromised cards.

The Federal Trade Commission offers tips for consumers concerned about card skimmers, which may be valuable information to pass on to drivers and user departments:

• Ensure the gas pump panel is closed. Many gas stations place a label over the cabinet panel and warn users to alert employees if the label has been tampered with.  

• Look at the card reader and check to make sure it does not look different from other card readers at the gas station.

• Pay inside if you’re concerned about card skimmers.

• Monitor credit card and bank accounts regularly to spot unauthorized charges.
