PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Police Department is using more than $60,000 donated from the Philadelphia Police Foundation to purchase ten two-wheeled, motorized, standup Segway Personal Transporters, according to KYW Newsradio.

More than 1,000 municipalities, airports, military bases, private security firms, emergency response brigades, and other public and private safety organizations use the Segway PTs for patrolling, according to the Segway Web site.

Police commissioner Charles Ramsey said the units are an extension of foot patrol and offer some unique benefits, such as greater visibility with the raised platform, as well increased speed, reported KYW.

Ramsey said the Segways will initially be deployed in Philadelphia areas such as Center City, University City, Manayunk, and Southwest Philadelphia, according to KYW.

The Philadelphia Police Foundation, comprised of civic leaders and corporate executives from the Greater Philadelphia region, is an independent, nonprofit organization that strives to promote and maintain public safety by providing resources to the Philadelphia police department.
